Member States have requested the Secretary-General to ensure that all United Nations programmes pursue the strategies of gender mainstreaming and gender balance. Gender mainstreaming is "the process of assessing the implications for women and men of any planned action". [1] It focuses attention on ensuring that the concerns and experiences of individuals of both sexes are taken into consideration in the design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of programmes.
The United Nations Inter-Agency Mine Action Strategy: 2006-2010 explicitly makes reference to the ensurance of gender mainstreaming in mine action.
Guiding Principle on Gender Mainstreaming in UN Mine Action Strategy
"UN mine action work plans will address the impact of mine action on men, women, boys and girls, and seek to involve them to the extent possible in the planning and implementation of mine action initiatives." (UN Inter-Agency Mine Action Strategy: 2006-2010)
The Guidelines are now available and presented as a working document. Their distribution and use will be monitored by the Steering Committee for a period of one year, and feedback-guided revisions will be incorporated into an updated version next year.
